Krug Grande Cuvée, 168th Edition, Brut
A tin of Danish cookies
Enjoyed on: February 27, 2021
Grapes: 52% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 13% Pinot Meunier
Color: Golden Treasure. The color is swashbuckling and reminiscent of a fairytale. Lively bead. The label, we feel, prepares you for the color and quality waiting inside the bottle.
Lively and oaky on the nose. We got toffee, caramel, toast, and a bit of dark chocolate. It comes across like opening a sealed tin of Danish butter cookies.
The taste overall is rich and full bodied. We had to sip a few times before we got the chronology of it. First is a high and strident note (citrus, stone fruits) that at the same time does not hide its oakiness. In the center is a bread and brioche passage that packs the deeper flavors of fruit cake: nutmeg, cloves, spiced rum. Finally, it finishes buttery and mellow, with notes of caramel, but also melon and even a hint of passionfruit. That brioche in the middle is the backbone of the whole shebang. It reminded us of shortbread, sweet and silky-rich.
There is so much going on here, it forces you to pay attention as elegant flavors glide across the tongue. That’s kind of what richness is, right? Giving your tongue something to do at all moments. As we drank, we fell silent--unusual around here. We were captivated.
This is a champagne that doesn’t end up going in a certain direction. A glass in, usually, a champagne surrenders to categorization. But not this one.
And finally, at the end of a sip and the end of our second glass, I noticed the final note it leaves you with: a lingering taste of bread dough. Even at the finish, it sings with potential.
